The story of Madeleine and how the the Multipurpose Centers lead to skills building

Madeleine Kasumbu, a resilient woman in her mid-30s, was forced to flee her home due to violent conflict. Displacement brought her to Salamabila in Maniema Province, where she struggled to rebuild her life. Like many internally displaced persons (IDPs), Madeleine faced numerous challenges, including financial instability. But a life-changing opportunity came her way at the Multi-Purpose Center (MPC).

A Fresh Start at the Multi-Purpose Center

The Multi-Purpose Center in Salamabila was established under the project "Improving access to education and protection services for conflict-affected populations in South Kivu", funded by ECHO. It offers training, psychosocial support, and protection services to vulnerable populations, including displaced individuals. Madeleine enrolled in the sewing training program, determined to acquire a skill that could provide a sustainable income.

“Joining the MPC gave me hope,” she says. “I wanted to learn something useful, a skill that could help me support myself and my family.”

Stitching a New Future

In just a few months, Madeleine became proficient in tailoring, creating everything from school uniforms to traditional garments. As she progressed, she also began mentoring other women, passing on the skills she had learned.

“Teaching others has been so fulfilling. It’s not just about sewing—it’s about showing other women that they too can rebuild their lives,” she says with pride.

The MPC gave Madeleine more than just a trade; it gave her a sense of belonging. She now earns a living making and selling clothes in the local market. Her income has provided stability and the opportunity to dream again.

Empowering Others and Building Resilience

Today, Madeleine is a community role model. Her work at the MPC has not only transformed her own life but also empowered other women facing similar challenges. She dreams of opening her own tailoring shop, creating more employment opportunities for women in the area.

“The training gave me more than a skill—it gave me a future,” Madeleine reflects. “Now, I want to give other women the same opportunity.”

Transforming Lives Through Skills and Support

The story of Madeleine exemplifies the impact of the ECHO-funded project, "Improving access to education and protection services for conflict-affected populations in South Kivu." Through vocational training, community integration, and psychosocial support, the Multi-Purpose Center has become a beacon of hope for displaced individuals seeking to rebuild their lives.

Madeleine’s journey from displacement to empowerment is a powerful reminder that with the right support, individuals can overcome adversity and create brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
