Celebrating Resilience: International Women's Day in Bulengo-Goma IDP Camp

In the heart of the Bulengo-Goma IDP Camp in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, ActionAid DRC, alongside Country Director Saani Yakubu, recently orchestrated a poignant celebration in honor of International Women's Day. Despite the backdrop of conflict and displacement, this event served as a testament to the unwavering resilience and remarkable achievements of women within the community.

Showcasing Talent and Empowerment

The event saw over 500 project beneficiaries coming together to showcase their talents and share their stories of empowerment. Through various programs funded by the UNFPA project, these women have received vital psychosocial support, medical assistance, and training in essential skills for socio-economic reintegration.

Uplifting Lives Amidst Adversity

From demonstrating skills in soap making, dressmaking, to bead making, the project beneficiaries illuminated how these newfound abilities have uplifted their lives amidst adversity. Their accomplishments not only symbolize personal triumphs but also underscore the importance of creating avenues for skill development and economic empowerment in crisis settings.

Navigating Challenges Amidst Renewed Conflict

However, the joy of celebration was accompanied by the stark reality of renewed clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) and the non-state armed group M23. Since February 2, 2024, this conflict has led to the displacement of over 150,000 individuals, intensifying the humanitarian crisis in the region, particularly affecting women and children.

A Symbolic Visit: WFP Chief Cindy McCain

A highlight of the celebration was the presence of WFP Chief Cindy McCain, whose visit underscored the urgent need to empower women in crisis settings. Interacting with project beneficiaries, McCain's presence shed light on the formidable challenges faced by women in conflict-affected areas, reaffirming the importance of ongoing support and advocacy.

A Commitment to Empowerment and Resilience

Cindy McCain's visit served as a poignant reminder of the collective commitment to nurturing resilience and fostering opportunities for women to thrive, even amidst the most daunting circumstances. Through initiatives like this, ActionAid DRC and its partners continue to champion women's empowerment and socio-economic reintegration, embodying the spirit of strength in solidarity.
