Building Hope: The Successful Handover of Shelters in Kirotshe Health Zone
ActionAID, with funding support from Humanitarian Fund, constructs and handsover 2150 shelters to Internally Displaced Persons in Kirotshe health zone of North Kivu
In July 2024, a transformative chapter unfolded for 2,150 beneficiaries in the Kirotshe health zone of North Kivu as the ABRIS-AME project completed the handover of newly constructed shelters. This initiative, designed to provide multi-sectoral assistance to those affected by violence, has been a beacon of hope for vulnerable households in the region.
Who Benefited?
Among the beneficiaries were 401 male-headed households, 1,340 female-headed households, and 409 persons with disabilities (PWDs), all of whom received essential support in the form of safe and secure shelters. The completion of this initiative was not marked by a grand ceremony, but rather a quiet acknowledgment of the resilience and strength within the community as families stepped into their new homes.
Voices of Change: Beneficiary Testimonies
One single mother expressed gratitude, stating, “For months, my children and I lived in fear, unsure of where we would sleep each night. This new shelter is more than just a roof over our heads; it is a place where we can feel safe and begin to heal from the trauma we experienced. I can finally breathe again.”
A head of a household with elderly family members shared relief, saying, “The support from ActionAid has changed our lives. We were struggling to find a place to call home, and now we have a shelter that protects us. It allows us to focus on rebuilding our lives and caring for our loved ones.”
A young woman with disabilities conveyed appreciation for the project, mentioning, “Having a safe space where I can move freely is a blessing. This shelter means I can invite friends over and feel like I belong. I am no longer hiding; I can be part of my community again.”
Commitment to Improvement
The ABRIS-AME project, implemented by ActionAid International (AAI) in partnership with the local organization APES and funded by the Humanitarian Fund (FH) DRC, aims to improve living conditions for displaced populations, returnees, and host families in the Masisi territory. The successful handover of shelters underscores the project’s commitment to addressing urgent housing needs and restoring dignity to those affected by violence.
A Future of Hope
As families settle into their new homes, they are not only gaining physical shelter but also a renewed sense of security and hope for the future. The impact of this initiative extends beyond just providing a roof; it is about fostering resilience, rebuilding lives, and empowering individuals to thrive in their communities.
ActionAid International remains dedicated to continuing its efforts in the region, working alongside partners and beneficiaries to create sustainable solutions that uplift and support the most vulnerable populations. Through these collective endeavors, the spirit of community collaboration shines brightly, paving the way for a better tomorrow.
